The complete crew never flew out of Harrington, only into it. Transferring to Harrington from Cheddington on 14 March 1945, their plane lost an engine and altitude shortly after takeoff. On landing at Station 179, one wheel strut collapsed, sending the plane tumbling and killing the Navigator. Only two crew members, Parker-Butts and Markovitch, escaped injury. They later flew with other crews at Harrington. Parker-Butts departed Harrington on 28Jun45 with the Bingham crew. Fifty-five years later, it was ruled that all killed and injured should be awarded the Purple Heart, because the accident was due to aircraft damage by the enemy two weeks prior that had been incorrectly repaired.
